Tips calculator
Allocate a tip pool clearly and consistently.
Enter each employee’s hours and the agreed weighting for their position. The calculator divides the total pool in proportion to their weighted hours.
Open the calculatorWeighted-hours calculator
From hours worked to a reconciled tip allocation.
The calculation follows the supplied spreadsheet: hours × position weighting = weighted hours. Each person then receives their share of the total weighted hours.
How weighting works
1.0 is the baseline. A weighting of 1.2 gives 20% more weighted credit per hour, while 1.5 gives 50% more. The employer should set and communicate the weight assigned to each position.
This tool provides a proportional calculation. Employers remain responsible for applying their agreed tipping policy and applicable obligations.
| Employee | Position | Weight | Hours | Weighted hours | Tip share | Remove |
|---|
Calculation method
A fair share of the weighted total.
How is each tip share calculated?
The employee’s hours are multiplied by their position weight. Their weighted hours are divided by the weighted hours of all eligible employees, then multiplied by the total tip pool.
Will the allocations add up exactly?
Yes. The calculator allocates whole cents and distributes any rounding remainder so the displayed employee shares reconcile exactly to the entered pool.
Who decides the position weights?
The calculator does not prescribe weights. Employers enter the weighting used by their own documented policy and can record the relevant position beside each employee.
